Werfenweng

Rural village located on a beautiful plateau in Tennengebirge/Salzburgerland. Tourism has had a long tradition here and been very important in the local economy. The farms get their income mainly from the tourism sector too (approx. 280.000 overnight stays, 50 % in the summer, and 50 % in the winter season).
Based on a tourism strategy developed in 1994, Werfenweng is consistently pursuing the path of sustainable development. The model town has made a name for itself in soft mobility and is a member of the Alpine Pearls, an Alpine-wide network for car-free tourism.

e5 – energy efficient village

The e5 program encourages and supports Austria's municipalities to modernize their energy and climate protection policies, to save energy and thus costs, and to use renewable energy sources. Currently, 240 municipalities and cities from 7 federal states are participating in the e5 program across Austria,Werfenweng is part of the e5-communities in Austria since 2005. 2013 Werfenweng was certified with eeee (maximum are 5e). The Auditreport of 2021 shows high performonce especially in the action field mobility (90,8%).But in four out of six fields of action Werfenweng is already at 5e level.

Soft-mobile Village Werfenweng

Mobility without a car: shuttle transfer from train station to hotel (12 km), taxi “Elois”, e-Taxi service, night shuttle, e-rental cars; Fun Mobility: Soft-mobility Fun park: electric and fun vehicles. The car-free center of our village with solar filling station is our soft-mobile hire-station: electric vehicles and scooters, bicycles, carts, e-quads funrider, bigas, e-bikes, e-mountain-bikes, segways, etc.

Social and Soft-mobile infrastructure for inhabitants and tourists:
• Installation of an advisory board for architecture and community development
• Expansion of soft mobility offers
• Cross-community W3 shuttle to improve the public transport offer
• Conversion of (PV) LED street lighting
• Further development of the meeting zone in the town centre
• Development of village centre with multiple positive aspects for the local population
